The Alaskan Malamute (also malamute or wolf dog) is a large Nordic dog that was bred by the Eskimos as a draft dog, intended for group pulling of heavy sleds over long distances in extreme polar conditions. It was not recognized as a breed until the 20th century, e.g. in the USA in 1935.
